Abstract
The regeneration of hemopoietic stroma in anemic mice of genotypes Sl/Sl(d) and W/W(v) was studied by transplantation of spleen and bone marrow tissue to the subcutaneous tissue of their normal littermates. Both splenic and marrow implants from Sl/Sl(d) and W/W(v) mice showed normal regenerative patterns indicating that the regenerative potential of hemopoietic stroma is intact in both genotypes. The implants from Sl/Sl(d) mice into their normal littermates showed little erythropoietic activity, whereas the erythropoietic activity of implants from W/W(v) mice into their normal littermates was noticeably increased as compared to that of the donor organs. Since these implants represent a chimaeric structure with stroma of donor origin and hemopoietic cells from the host, this observation emphasizes the inability of the transplanted hemopoietic stroma from Sl/Sl(d) mice to support erythropoiesis in the presence of normal stem cells and microenvironment of their littermates, despite normal structural integrity of the transplanted stroma. These findings suggest a defective interaction between matrix and erythroid precursors in anemic Sl/Sl(d) mice.
