Abstract
Purpose. To investigate the relationships between angle configuration and refractive error, axial length, age and body height in Japanese. Methods. Slitlamp examination, A-scan biometry and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) were performed. Images were exported to an IBM-compatible PC in PCX format. Angle recess area (ÄRA) was then measured using a software program of our own design. Results. 33 normal subjects were enrolled (15 males and 18 females; mean age, 38.6 ±14.7 yrs (range, 21-69); mean axial length, 23.7 ±1.2 mm; mean refractive error, -1.2 ±1.6 D). Mean ARA was 0.21 ±0.07 mm2. Mean body height was 161.8 ±9.1 cm. Taller patients (p=0.01, ANOVA), younger patients (p=0.007) and eyes with longer axial length (p0.0001) tended to have wider angles. Conclusion. We hypothesize that the epidemiology of angle closure glaucoma in Japan may change in the next generation relative to increasing levels of myopia and improved nutritional status.
