Congenital band causing pseudarthrosis and impending gangrene of the leg. A case report with successful treatment

Congenital bands, also called ring constrictions, annular defects, amniotic bands, and Streeter dysplasia, are anomalous bands that encircle, either partially or completely, a digit or an extremity. These bands may involve just the skin but they can be as deep as the underlying skeletal structures, and some have caused subtotal or total autoamputation. The part distal to the band may appear to be entirely normal, or it may be edematous or even gangrenous. The incidence of this condition in newborn infants has been estimated to be 0.01 per cent. We are reporting an unusual case of a newborn infant with impending gangrene of a lower extremity secondary to a complete, severe congenital ring constriction associated with a tibial defect.
